Indianapolis Literary Club records, 1877-2009

The collection contains minutes, correspondence, financial papers, papers read at meetings, newspaper clippings, memorials to deceased members, membership proposals, programs, yearbooks, glass slides, and card files. The papers presented by members include 27 by longtime secretary Francis H. Insley, 1913-1979. The glass slides contain humorous photos of members shown at a club dinner in 1914.

The Indianapolis Literary Club was organized in January, 1877 for the pursuit of "social, literary, and aesthetic culture," and is still active. Membership is restricted to men, is by invitation only, and has always included notable city residents and leaders. A usual meeting consists of a club member delivering a paper on a topic of his choice, followed by discussion.
